THE LETTER:
A message for our Earth
A film inspired by Laudato Si’, on Care for our Common Home The film premiered at the Vatican on the feast of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology. It follows the story of five people, representing groups marginalised in environmental deliberations, on their way to meet the Pope to discuss the growing threats of climate change. After their papal meeting they go to Assisi, the home of St Francis, whose Canticle of the Creatures provided the name for the encyclical Laudato Si’.
Behind the lens was Nicolas Brown: Our original question was, Can faith and science unite to save the planet? Brown transformed the Pope’s document into a visual journey portraying the lives of those impacted by environmental destruction. He recognised that there was no story in the encyclical, so thought it might be an idea to bring together people from different walks of life, those disenfranchised from the process of decision making around climate change: the voice of the poor, the voice of youth, voice of the Indigenous, the voice of the wildlife. We’re telling Laudato Si’ through the eyes of the people who live it.
