The Conference on the Future of Europe is a unique and timely opportunity for European citizens to debate on Europe’s challenges and priorities. No matter where you are from or what you do, this is the place to think about what future you want for the European Union.
In recent correspondence Bishop Brendan said; “I would like to bring to your attention an initiative on the part of the European Union that I suggest is worth letting parishioners know about. It is called “The Conference on the Future of Europe” and wants to offer European citizens an opportunity to debate on Europe’s challenges and priorities. The basic question is: what future do you want for the European Union? So often the European Union can seem something distant for a lot of people. With this initiative, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission have committed to listen to Europeans and to follow up, within their sphere of competences, on the recommendations made. Anybody can take part. It’s enough to google the “Conference on the Future of Europe” website and you’ll find various possibilities and options. I think as Church we have a role in letting people know about this and encouraging involvement. Let’s remember that among those who established the European Union were committed Catholics, one of whom, Robert Schumann has recently been declared Venerable by Pope Francis”.
