The parish of Monaleen was created in June 1971. The parish was formerly part of the St Patrick’s parish. Monaleen is from the Irish Móin a’ Lín, which means ‘the bog of the flax’.

The population of the parish is around 10,000 but it is expanding rapidly due to its proximity to Limerick City.
